Australians have exceptionally high standards when it comes to coffee. We’re so passionate about it that coffee helped pull cafes through the global financial crisis[1]. No matter where you live or work you’re sure to have a favourite café – with a barista who knows you by your coffee order.

Jibbi Little is one of those amazing baristas who spends her day putting a smile on the face of café goers. A self-taught latte artist – and the current NSW Latte Art Champion - Jibbi inspires customers with her passion for latte art, including her signature lucky unicorn design.

“My interest in coffee and latte art began six years ago when I came to Sydney to study and I worked in a café,” said Jibbi.

“My latte art began as a very basic way to mix espresso with milk. Then, it became my passion. Now I can do so much. Everything is still the combination of a heart, a leaf or a tulip.

“It took about four years before I felt ready to compete and in the last year I’ve won five latte art smackdowns. I really enjoy competing against other baristas but I’m also competing against myself – it’s great for improving my skills.

“As the NSW Latte Art champion I have met so many skilful baristas and everyone has their own technique. We share knowledge about latte art and the different designs – we often have our personal favourites and signature designs.

“I’ve used the Oracle™ from Breville a number of times and it’s a brilliant machine for home baristas. It produces the best mix of good espresso with the right amount of control. And it’s easy for texturing the milk – which is the key element for latte art.

“My suggestion for home baristas wanting to finesse their latte art skills is to steam the milk properly to get the right texture. Once you achieve this, you will be able to practice and create basic and complicated latte art patterns. Be patient and keep practicing.”
